Thoughts While Waiting
Location: Changi Airport Gate E24 waiting for my flight to FrankfurtTime: Valentine's Day, 10:38pm
Not an auspicious start to my trip -- first, they won't let me change my connecting flight so I have a 7 hour (!!!) transit in Frankfurt! Groan... Then, of all the things to forget, I leave my Krisflyer Gold card at home so I may not even get into the lounge!!!
Piaw see. Of course I'm going to try again when I get to Frankfurt, but the Germans are immune to any sort of charm so I'm not hopeful. I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands.
Update (2/15/07: Waiting in the Frankfurt Lounge 3:12am SG time): So I wasn't able to change my flights but after much cajoling and threatening, they finally let me in the lounge. I don't know why they guard it so zealously, it's quite a sucky lounge. At least I get croissants and Nutella with some tea. All the cough medicine I'm taking is making me drowsy, which is actually a good thing since I've slept non-stop on the plane and I'm still feeling sleepy.
Naturally, I've had nothing but time to think, and read the newspapers. And surprisingly, everywhere I turn, I see nothing but Valentine stories about mush stuff. For a holiday that is supposed to celebrate love, we seem to be fixated on a very very small part of it which is the flower-and-chocolate-commercialized-romance.
Believe me, I'm all for romance but for the day that we set aside once a year, there is so much more to celebrate -- loyalty, commitment, devotion, the stuff of my parents' marriage. I know, I don't know why this stuff is always in my head these days.
But as I get older (and hopefully wiser), the more I think that love isn't just a passive feeling. Maybe it starts that way, but love really is a way of life, a decision, an action and, at its loveliest form, a reason for being. And that, my friends, is what we should be celebrating.
Happy Valentine's Everyone!! Especially to my parents, for having the kind of love I can only dream of.
