Counting my Blessings
Ever notice how it's the anticipation of things to come rather than the event itself, which is much more exciting? Christmas eve and New Year's eve have so much more fireworks and food and festive chatter that the actual days seem like let-downs compared to the pre-hype. I suppose we all need something to look forward to, to distract us from our mundane workaday world.And just like that, here are a couple of things I'm looking forward to in 2007:
1) My new assignment - 3 years in the making and hopefully finally happening soon. I'm going to be moving to another time zone and freezing my ass off getting used to 4 seasons. But I'm looking forward to all the winter jackets and looking cute in boots!
2) Yotch's wedding - Not that I want to see her move away, all the way to Chicago, but it's always nice to see 2 people in love pledge their lives to each other, and mean it. Besides, I can't think of anything more entertaining than Allan flubbing his vows in Filipino. :)
3) Family vacation - Ok, this definitely has to happen with everyone on board. It's been way too long since we all packed up our bags and jetted off somewhere for 2 weeks. More than seeing the new places and eating the strange food, it's always an experience traveling with my family. Never boring, always funny.
4) Traveling, traveling and more traveling - So many things to see and do, so little time. Great if P&G will sponsor my world tour but even if that doesn't happen, I have 40 vacation days to spend and I intend to use it with a pack on my back and a camera on hand. I will undoubtedly have almost nothing left in my bank account after these 3 years of self-serving indulgence, but hopefully, my kids will forgive me after I give them the best bedtime stories.
It's hard to look forward to 2007 without taking a look back at the year that was. 2006 was in many ways a quixotic, paradoxical romp -- the year I was forced to grow up yet desperately trying my darned-est to remain a kid, full of dreams and fancy-free, the year I was the most selfish, self-centered, totally me-obsessed version of me yet at times, uncharacteristically generous, and the year I laughed, cried and loved the most in 28 years of existence. In 2006, I...
... almost got married (we're still friends!),
... finally had family and friends over after 4 years in Singapore (!),
... tried authentic Beluga caviar,
... had a blast in NY,
... met some fantastic new friends traipsing thru Asia,
... and some fantastic old friends back in good old Manila,
... prayed the hardest for my dad and the moms of my nearest and dearest,
... bought my 1st painting,
... moved into my new cozy apartment,
... realized really and truly what it means to be family,
... discovered 24 and,
... lived and kayak'd more than I've ever in my entire life.
It's been quite a ride. Thanks for coming along the year with me.
